Teh Scary Wind Turbines

Adam Morton has a piece in The Age today on some of the political goings on around wind farms in Victoria: You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. Well worth a read.

The article mentions the recent findings of the National Health and Medical Research Council research into Wind Turbines and Health. A helpful pushback to some of the random anecdotal claims going around.

The Public Statement presents the current evidence relating potential health impacts of wind turbines on people living in close proximity. The Statement concludes that there is currently no published scientific evidence to positively link wind turbines with adverse health effects.

And also reminded me of a recent tweet from Hepburn Wind highlighting recent analysis done to overcome the need for illumination and red flashing lights on wind turbines: Wind farm switches off lights

What: Public Meeting

Renewable is Do-able Public Meeting
We have organized a public meeting to alert the wider community to the fact that renewable energy is available right now, and it is up to our leaders to show the foresight to commit the framework that penetrates the dated social and economic barriers that renewables contend against in Australia.
We have a tremendous line up of speakers that include:
- Rob Gell, environmental geographer and television weather presenter
- Mark Ogge, facilitator of “Zero Carbon Australia 2020” report, Beyond Zero Emissions
- Clive Hamilton, bestselling author of ‘Scorcher – The dirty politics of climate change’, candidate for Higgins, and director of the Australia Institute.
A question time will follow where the public can ask questions of the speakers directly.

When: 6.30pm, Thursday December 3

Where: Fitzroy Town hall, 201 Napier St, Fitzroy

Hepburn Wind Update

An update arrived in the mail the other day from Hepburn Wind. Looks like the project is going ahead. They raised almost $4million in capital from the share offer. They’re looking at various options for the remainder of the financing required, and will now accept further applications to purchase shares. News release here

Van Jones, Green for All

I’ve just come across Van Jones thanks to his appointment as Green Jobs Advisor to the White House Council on Environmental Quality (thanks to Al Giordano). He has put forward some fascinating perspectives linking our response to the climate crisis with poverty and social justice.

Check out Green-For-All, which Van Jones launched in 2007.

Update. A talk featuring Jones on The Green Collar Economy.

Hepburn Wind Share Offer

The Hepburn Community Wind Park, Australia’s first community owned wind farm, has recently opened their share offer. A pretty impressive effort by a community based group in my opinion.

At a glance it is $1 per share, with a minimum of 1000 shares (total issue is 9,679,000 shares). The project is expected to begin earning in 2010, with average projected annual earnings of 13.9 cents/share (before tax) for the 25 year life of the project. I haven’t read the rest yet. More information on their website.
